Modern Mothership

EDUCATOR &
POSTPARTUM DOULA

Hello! I’m Clowance.

We spend 9 months preparing for birth and then baby arrives and postpartum is just supposed to…. happen.

Around 1 in 5 women in New Zealand are diagnosed with postnatal depression or anxiety. I believe much of this is preventable. When Mothers are properly tended to in the fourth trimester, their bodies can heal and their nervous systems can settle. Postpartum care isn’t a luxury — it’s preventative care.

When my second child was 9 months old, I trained as an Innate Postpartum Care Practitioner — because I knew from my own healing Mothers deserve better than “just happen”.

I work with Mothers and Families across Canterbury, offering care built around what your body actually needs to heal.

Regulated and nourished Mothers bring forth regulated and nourished children.

My services

  • POSTPARTUM CARE SESSIONS

‍In-home care that is tailored entirely to you.

If you’ve never heard of a postpartum doula before, you’re not alone — in New Zealand, this kind of support is still rare. In many other cultures it’s the norm: someone comes to your home is the weeks after birth to look after you, so you can rest and heal whilst tending to your baby.

Every postpartum care session is tailored around what you and your family need most - whether that’s nourishing food, bodywork, baby support, or simply someone with experience and calm in your corner.

Sessions are available as a one-off visit or as part of an ongoing care plan. The more sessions you book, the more you save.

Every session is unique but will always include nourishing food prepared specifically for postpartum healing.

    Sessions may also include:

    • Bodywork tailored to the needs of new mothers

    • Birth experience debrief and emotional support

    • Ceremony and closing of the bones

    • Family and baby support

    • Expert guidance on postpartum recovery

    • Herbal and homeopathic support

I believe Mothers already know what their bodies and babies need. My job is to help you trust that.

    Cost: $100/hr ~ 3 hour minimum ~

Available to Christchurch and wider Canterbury.

  • Planning for the Fourth Trimester Workshop

    For Mothers, Fathers and Whanāu

There’s a lot of focus on preparing for the birth of your baby - what comes after is often left to chance. What many families don’t realise until they are in it, is that the early postpartum period can be one of the most challenging seasons for new families. Trying to cobble together a plan whilst you are in the thick of it does not serve you or your family.

Most Fathers and partners want to help - this class shows you how.

Ancient healing traditions - from Ayurveda to Chinese Medicine - have long understood that how a woman is nourished and cared for in the weeks after birth has a profound impact on her health for decades to come. When mothers don’t receive the warmth, rest and nourishment they need, depletion can quietly surface years later - in energy levels , in hormone balance and in how a woman experiences perimenopause and beyond.

Planning for this period is preventative health care.

This workshop brings families together to do exactly that - prepare, connect and step into the postpartum with intention.

    Cost: $450 (two adults)

    Both in-person and online options

  • Mini Mother Retreats

You have fed everyone but yourself. Adult conversations are few and far between. You’ve googled “is this normal” more times than you’d like to admit — alone at 2am with a baby on your chest.

Motherhood was never meant to be done alone — yet so often it is.

Once a month, we open the doors of our retreat space in South Christchurch as an antidote to that isolation. A drop-in space for Mothers and their babies — older siblings welcome too— where we tag-team so that every Mother gets her turn to receive.

There’s always food, and the option of a sauna to sweat it out and my ear and expertise as a postpartum doula, whenever you need it.

This isn’t a class or a workshop — there’s no agenda to follow and nothing you need to prepare. Some Mothers come to eat a meal with two hands. Some Mothers come to hand the baby off for twenty minutes and close their eyes. Some Mothers come to be in a room with other women who get it, without having to explain themselves. Come and hang. Bring your older kids. It’s all good.

When: First Wednesday of every month, 10am-1pm

    Cost: $25

Come as you are. That’s the whole point.
